Hi. I'm Rebecca Lauderdale. I'm the host of the women physicians flourish podcast. I'm an internist. I practice primary care general internal medicine in the deep south. And I know what it's like to struggle. I know what it's like to think that flourishing is just not possible. but through my own experience, I have become a student of life and flourishing. And by that, I don't mean that I'm an expert. I'm not an academic, but I've got a lot of life experience and also a tenacity for finding the truth.
And I've met many of you many physicians who have experienced similar things and
some of you found your ways out like I did just scrambling and clawing your way without much help in the way of mentors. I didn't have voices in my ear of people around me who. Talked about their experiences in a way that made me feel like I wasn't alone. That's one of the main reasons I started the women physicians flourish podcast last year. I also did because I recognized pretty early on that many of the things I struggled with were things that related to the fact that I'm a woman.
There are significant cultural and societal reasons for that. And it can take a great deal of courage to work against our conditioning and against the expectations of others. So that we can live in a way that works for us. And also that paves the way for women who come after us.
It's also really important to have a group of people, a tribe of people who are encouraging and who can tell it to you straight and who know what it's like to go through what you've gone through.
So I created this podcast to be that space. To be an opportunity for, um, encouragement and empathy and. Feeling like you're not alone. So I'm getting ready for season two right now. I hope you'll join me. You can listen to season one now, wherever you get your podcasts. And season two episodes will begin releasing very soon.
I'll have an episode on the difference between self-valuation and resilience.
We all know that physicians are resilient. But one thing that some new data points too, that rings so true for me is that we are lacking in self-valuation: those actions that we take toward our own wellbeing. And the thoughts that we have about ourselves when we experience difficulty. We'll talk about that and how the lack of self value that we express in our own lives affects our likelihood of experiencing burnout. And then we'll also talk about how we might begin to change that.
We'll also have some episodes on grief. We've all been through a lot of loss the last couple years. And we grieve things, not just, not just death, but we grieve losses. Sometimes we grieve surprising things. If we leave a job that we didn't like, you can still feel grief over that because of the loss of a dream we had of what we hoped that would be, um, some of us have lost relationships. Some of us have lost. Dreams, some of us have lost opportunities. And we'll talk about how. Expressing grief and being open with it. Is so freeing and giving space to grief to allow it, to change us and let us grow. Is such an amazing alternative to keeping it quiet and letting it keep us small. We will also talk about. The history of women in medicine and maybe some things about the ancient history of women healers that you didn't know. And the ways that. Some of our political and religious systems have at times, many times, unfortunately, dramatically suppressed the ability of women to act as healers And in some cases actually actively sought out to destroy our ability to do so. We'll talk about women who are trailblazers, whose work has allowed us to be able to practice in this profession. I always love hearing stories like that because it helps me to feel more courage in blazing trails in my little part of the world.
One thing. This podcast is not, is a list of more things for you to do. There is no hustle here, so don't worry.
If you're a woman in medicine, I hope that you will join me. If you are someone who doesn't identify as a woman or you're not a physician, you're still welcome here. There's always room for more.
So I hope to see you soon and until then much love.
